CONCACAF Gold Cup 2011 Finals

Well, according to some pundits, this was the Gold Cup final that everybody was hoping for (everybody, that is, except for the populations of the other countries involved in the tourney, I reckon ;), and it should be a good one: USA v Mexico, at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena. If I’d been on top of things some months back, I should’ve gotten tickets. Saturday at 5:30 Pacific on the Fox Soccer Channel.

I didn’t catch the second game last night, but the USA v Panama game was a good one, if only for a single moment of Freddy Adu to Landon Donovan to Clint Dempsey. One of those moments when everything just works. Of course you spend hundreds of hours practicing to make that moment “just work,” but you know what I mean. :D

Anyhow, Freddy has matured far beyond his wild youth when he was touted as the savior of US Soccer, Donovan’s pass was just plain brilliant as hell, and Dempsey’s follow through and goal was as meaningful as the subsequent celebration when he kept pointing at Landon and Freddy. Well done, boys. Highlights of both games below.

Blue Purgatory

Last July, I wrote a post here documenting the Midseason Malaise both the Dodgers and myself found ourselves in. An excerpt:

When an activity that is normally an escape from the depressing parts of existence becomes itself depressing…well, what is there to write about? Especially if you’re not one to tear down your favorite team for the sake of talking about something. There’s a surfeit of commenters online, not to mention talk show hosts and callers, who like nothing more than to kvetch 24/7 about the smallest Dodger problems, never mind the major issues — they don’t need any help from me.

Here we are, a mere few weeks into the 2011 season, and the malaise is already upon us. Except that this year, the depressing news applies to the Lakers as well. Things turned ugly last night. Real ugly. No amount of seeing writing on the wall the last month of the Laker season could forewarn us that the writing would end with a string of profanities.

(As mixed as the Dodger season has been so far, the Boys in Blue haven’t been acting like the Purple and Gold. The team, however, has had its own ugliness to deal with.)

Things are also not exactly like the (newly re-minted) Silver and Black, with a string of heartbreaking losses in their playoff series versus the Sharks. The season is still young.

No, we have ownership issues. Such issues. And now with no historical hitting streak to distract us from the latest bad news, I joked to friends of mine that I was thinking of giving up watching the local teams and switching to World News so I can cheer up a little.

As the Lakers and Kings were gearing up for their playoff runs earlier this year, I was pondering expanding the Trolley Dodger into more of an LA sports blog rather than just the Dodgers. Lakers and Kings, sure, not to mention the suddenly intriguing Clippers, the “5th-sport” teams Galaxy and Chivas USA, and the reportedly inevitable return of an NFL team to LA. Now, I’m not so sure. If all the bad news keeps up, I’m going to need intensive therapy to get over my sports depression.

I do have a summer to get over the 2010-11 Lakers and Kings, and hopefully the 2011 Dodgers will put it all together during that same period. And it’s not as if there is no good Dodger news. Ethier and Kemp are carrying the team, and despite the bullpen woes, our starters are doing pretty well. New manager Don Mattingly has been impressive enough for a rookie. There might even be a pot of gold at the end of the McCourt rainbow. As usual, patience is called for. Lots and lots of patience.

Besides, I’m not desperate enough for World News yet.

The Wave

Mexican Wave
Mexican Wave by wonker, on Flickr

A short article in the science section of The Guardian, “Nature’s own Mexican wave”, makes connections between The Wave (as often performed in Dodger Stadium) and giant Asian honeybees, then continues with studies looking at the minimum number of people you need to start a Wave, its speed, and whether clockwise or counterclockwise movement was more prevalent.

No word on how to stop one once it’s gotten started, however. ;)

Spring has sprung

That bright light outdoors must mean that Spring has officially sprung and the sounds of baseball are in the air.

Yes, this is not news to most online fans, those who have been religiously following and commenting on every last organizational wiggle since the end of the 2009 season. Having been one of those bloggers and one of those fans in off-seasons past, I had to take a step back this time around. A sort of palate cleansing, if you will.

After the McCourts’ implosion news threatened to turn the 2010 baseball season into a year-long episode of Divorce Court, I took a mental step back from MLB and turned my attention to the Lakers’ title defense, the Kings’ rebuilding plan coming to fruition, World Cup 2010 preparations, and Landon Donovan’s successful run with Everton FC.

Which is not to say I haven’t been keeping up on Dodger developments.

Storylines I’m especially curious about at the moment:

  • The Eric Gagné Experiment, now moved to the minor league camp.
  • Just how awesomely lethal the Kemp-Ethier combo could be this year.
  • Just how awesomely lethal the Kershaw-Billingsley combo could be this year.
  • Whether Furcal is as revitalized as he thinks he is.
  • Where James McDonald winds up pitching, and whether he’s starting or relieving.
  • Is Ramon Ortiz for real?
  • What’s the severity of Kuo’s current elbow injury?
  • Whither Belisario?
  • What’s up with Russell Martin?
  • Will the revised Union Station -> Dodger Stadium shuttle stick this time around?
  • What does Garrett Anderson have in the tank?

So, with my baseball batteries recharged, I can finally relax a bit, look forward to the Spring’s first hot dog at the first ball game, and feel excited about the Dodgers again. :)

Congrats!

Belated congratulations to Jon Weisman and Tony Jackson for their respective moves to ESPN Los Angeles. Not to mention blogger Bob Timmermann joining LA Observed. Much success to them all!

Finally, an especial congratulations and thanks to Trolley-favorite Nomar Garciaparra, who recently announced his retirement. Thanks for the classiness, the carne asada, and the memories.
