Brad Penny to Cardinals?

Rumors are swirling now, and every team that needs pitching will probably be linked with the Dodgers at some point, but this blurb in the St. Louis Post-Dispatch is interesting: “On the trade front, the Dodgers are dangling starter Brad Penny as a spark for talk with the Cardinals.”

The bat that immediately comes to mind, after you stop dreaming of a Pujols Christmas, is third baseman Scott Rolen, the one who reportedly had a falling out with Tony La Russa last season. Rolen in 2006: .296/.369/.518, 22 HR, 95 RBI in 142 games. Penny and Wilson Betemit, perhaps? Rolen will be 32 next season, and has had injury problems at times.

Jim Edmonds’ name was bandied about until he resigned with the Cards this off season, so he’s likely off limits by rule.

Ned Colletti is in no rush, thankfully, so until a killer deal materializes, we’ll probably be running through these “what if” scenarios all winter long.

Unless Santa Claus comes through, of course. At Tuesday’s charity event with Tommy Lasorda playing Santa for the kids, Ned said: “I think I’m going to sit on Santa’s lap and ask for a power hitter.”
